and other news outlets are reporting that the U.S. Justice Department is requesting that the case against Washington PostSen. Bob Menendez, a Democrat from New Jersey, be dismissed after another Judge dismissed half of the charges. With a weakened case, prosecutors decided not to proceed with a retrial, which up until two weeks ago, they had been prepared to go forward with.
Sen. Menendez’s first trial ended in a mistrial in November, with 10 of the 12 jurors voting to acquit him.
Menendez had been accused of taking gifts from a personal friend and businessman, in exchange for political favors, a charge which he has consistently denied.
