Editor’s Note: We have been informed that this bill was filed by mistake and was rescinded on Feb 6th.
State Senator Jeff Van Drew (D), who is also running for United States House of Representatives in the 2nd District, has introduced a bill (Senate, No. 1681) that would require inmates who earned over $150,000/year over the four years preceding arrest, to pay for the cost of their incarceration.
Let me say that again. If you’re found guilty of a crime in New Jersey and sentenced to prison, Senator Van Drew thinks that in addition to serving time in prison, you should have to pay the state for the cost of doing so. This strikes me as especially cruel, given that the inmate no longer has the financial means to support themselves, which means it would fall on the family left behind.
I don’t know how this could be anything but cruel and unusual.
